VIP is secreted by a subset of secretomotor neurons under the influence of postganglionic parasympathetic neurons directly modulated by vagal efferents (Bitar et_al, 1980; Kirchgessner and Gershon, 1989; Yuan et_al, 2005). There is even evidence that changing the firing frequency can modulate peptide release of DMV efferents, which itself may be influenced . . .
