SUMMARY
In an insightful article in 2021 in the International Society of Microbial Ecology Journal, Hugenholtz and colleagues provided a comprehensive review of the history of prokaryotic taxonomy and highlighted current and future challenges (Hugenholtz et_al, 2021). The article contributed rich context for the ongoing debate over taxonomy and nomenclature, in particular, in regard to the uncultured majority of prokaryotes (Rinke et_al, 2013), and built a strong argument for genome-based taxonomy.
