• What: In this note, the authors provide novel evidence for a link between the Covid-19 pandemic and outbreaks of social unrest, as well as for the forces underlying this link. The analysis is based on a unique combination of nationally representative weekly survey data collected during the pandemic with measures of the consequences of the pandemic such as daily data on Covid-19-related deaths on the state level, state-level statistics on unemployment, and geo-localized event-level data on protests and riots at a weekly resolution.
