SUMMARY
An increasing number of people worldwide, including children, are suffering from inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). IBD (ICD-10-GM/2013: K50-K52) is grouped into Crohn`s disease (CD), ulcerative colitis (UC), and unclassified IBD (IBD-U). Epidemiological data describe a geographic north-south gradient of IBD disease incidence, similar to that observed in other autoimmune diseases, e_g, type-1-diabetes. The incidence of pediatric IBD per 100,000 varies greatly by geographical region, with reported incidences ranging from 0.5 to 23 for IBD, 0.1 to 13.9 for CD, 0.3 . . .
