SUMMARY
Agriculture is seen as a mainstay of the African economy, employing approximately 65% of the population. As a result, the productivity growth of agriculture in Africa has received more attention since the beginning of the twenty-first century and this has led to the establishment of the Comprehensive Africa Agriculture Development Programme (CAADP), an agriculture-growth led initiative for the entire continent where African Union member states spend 10% of their national budget on agriculture to realise annual agricultural growth of 6%.
