In the study , only macrophages from COPD patients were studied, and all patients had considerable exposure to tobacco smoke with a median pack year history of 50. The study shows that defective COPD macrophage phagocytosis of H. influenzae is associated with increased exacerbation frequency, likely a result of an intrinsic defect within the macrophage . . .
