  • What: Background Based on previous work on the identification of cognitive distortions in language data the authors aim to predict patient depression symptoms by identifying cognitive distortions in their psychotherapy transcripts. This approach has been developed by clinicians, who have identified and highlighted the role of distorted thinking for the perpetuation of depression (Beck, 1964; Ellis, 1957). Using explainable AI, the authors aim to identify the distortions that are most associated with depression both across the whole dataset and for individual patients.
