Developing a city-specific walkability index through a participatory approach

  • What: This study showcases the development of a city-specific walkability index through a participatory approach using Amsterdam as a case study. The participants were selected using a theoretical approach, meaning that they were chosen based on their relevance to the goals of this study (Newman and Ramlo, 2010). The authors compare the index with an existing walkability index provided by the municipality of Amsterdam. The answers from the survey had a strong correlation of 0.86 (P=0.001) with the scores calculated in the index.
