Effect of familiarity and recollection during constrained retrieval on incidental encoding for new “foil” information

SUMMARY

    This model suggests that memory retrieval entails re-implementing the neurocognitive processes involved during encoding; therefore, retrieval attempts also involve some degree of encoding (Buckner et_al, 2001; Vogelsang et_al, 2016). Behaviorally, the recognition performance for "foil" words was significantly better for the semantic compared to the non-semantic condition (Jacoby et_al, 2005; Danckert et_al, 2011; Halamish et_al, 2012; Messmer et_al, 2020; Salhi and Bergstrom, 2020). It has thus been proposed that retrieval is strategically oriented toward the relevant processing mode to facilitate memory search (Jacoby et_al, 2005; Halamish et_al, 2012; Vogelsang et_al, 2016, 2018 . . .
