SUMMARY

    Cognitive, ‘top-down` attention reorientation and right dorsolateral ‘top-down` cognitive monitoring, e_g, in experts, when compared to ‘bottom-up` control of attention reorientation, e_g, in novices, is proposed to be subserved by the dorsal posterior parietal and frontal regions of the brain during the laparoscopic surgical task (Fig 1d). Anterior cingulate/medial frontal cortex associated "internal monitoring" of error, e_g, error-related negativity, is postulated to be crucial for motor skill learning, where anterior cingulate/medial frontal cortex activity is known to scale with motor error.
