SUMMARY

While during fetal life the liver is the main Epo-producing organ, in adult mammals the kidney is essential for endocrine Epo production. Renal Epo regulation: much lauded but still incompletely understood Somewhat unusual for an endocrine hormone, the ratelimiting step in renal Epo synthesis takes place on the level of gene_expression. Transgenic mouse models identified the regulatory regions in the distal 5′ and proximal 3′ EPO gene flanking regions which direct EPO gene_expression in the kidney Pflügers Archiv - European Journal of Physiology 474:783-797 and liver, respectively.
