SUMMARY
Although some studies using C. elegans have shown α-synuclein cell-to-cell transmission within the somatic nervous system, or between neurons and other tissues, it remains to be demonstrated whether α-synuclein of digestive origin can seed the aggregation of α-synuclein localized in body tissues and promote neurodegeneration in a prion-like manner. The authors show that in animals expressing human α-synuclein ("host α-synuclein"), PFF feeding promotes α-synuclein aggregation in muscle cells and accelerates dopamine neuron degeneration.
