Hepatocyte-specific loss of melanocortin 1 receptor disturbs fatty acid metabolism and promotes adipocyte hypertrophy

HIGHLIGHTS

  • What: The authors aimed to study whether global MC1R deficiency renders mice susceptible for enhanced fat accumulation and obesity. This study shows, for the first time, the functional significance of MC1R in lipid metabolism, and that hepatocytes appear to be the responsible cells for mediating this regulatory function of MC1R. Although pathways related to lipid metabolism were not among the most significant GO terms in the enrichment analysis, the authors aimed to also quantify the hepatic expression of genes International Journal of Obesity 48:1625 - 1637 involved in lipogenesis, fatty_acid oxidation, and lipid droplet formation.
