SUMMARY
Previous studies have shown that MERS-CoV targets regions of the host cell genome that are essential to trigger an immune_response against pathogens such as bacteria and viruses, e_g HLA (Human Leukocyte Antigens) genes, inhibiting them in this role and thus rendering the infected individual incapable, or much less efficient in triggering an effective immune_response against infection. HLA/ MHC class I molecules (A, B, and C) present intracellular antigens, such as viral or tumor antigens, to CD8 positive T_cells (cytotoxic T lymphocytes, CTLs), stimulating a cytotoxic immune_response and to natural killer (NK) cells.
