SUMMARY
The biosynthetic pathway of GSH consists of two ATP-dependent reactions catalyzed by glutamate-cysteine ligase (GCL) and glutathione synthase (GS) and requires full availability of the two limiting amino_acids cysteine (Cys) and glycine (Gly), as the levels of glutamate are usually adjusted to necessity by intermediate metabolism. Cys is an amino_acid abundantly present in proteins, as disulfide_bridges play a fundamental role in the folding and stabilization of the tertiary_structure of the proteins, thereby supporting their biological activities.
