One of the most important dietary factors influencing the performance of herbivorous insects is the nitrogen concentration in their host: piercing- sucking insects, such as aphids, show a particularly strong response to nitrogen level in their 2 of 12 host_plants. The growth and reproduction of aphids are affected by the accessibility of essential nutrients in the phloem sap of host_plants. Studies have linked the population growth rate of the soybean aphid to nitrogen availability in soybeans: population growth increases when the aphids are on plants with increased phloem nitrogen concentration, such as on plants . . .
