SUMMARY
Extended-spectrum β-lactamases (ESBLs) are plasmid-mediated enzymes that inactivate β-lactam antibiotics, posing a significant therapeutic challenge in the treatment of both hospital and community-acquired infections. Most of the studies examining potential risk factors focus on high-risk populations, such as travelers, healthcare workers and patients, swimmers, farmers, and slaughterhouse workers, and often use small, convenient samples of, e_g, students.
