Programmes which put too great an emphasis on uptake and efficiency of screening programmes run the risk that people who are invited for screening are not supported to make an informed choice about their participation. Adequate information is thought to include risks, benefits, limitations and uncertainties of undertaking screening or not, and information on the condition itself, the screening process, and subsequent decisions that screening may lead to.
