Kosteletzkya experimental hybridization and chromosome pairing in (malvaceae, malvoideae, hibisceae), and possible implications for phylogeny and phytogeography in the genus

Each includes both diploid and polyploid species and each is distributed on both sides of the Atlantic, as well as in Australia. Gossypium comprises about , species (Fryxell in Verdcourt and Mwachala, ) and eight distinct genomes (Fryxell, Cronn and Wendel, ), while Hibiscus sect. Furcaria boasts over , species and , identified genomes (Krapovickas, Wilson, ). With a few intriguing exceptions their genomes correspond to, or are confined to, distinct geographical areas.
