Each includes both diploid and polyploid species and each is distributed on both sides of the Atlantic, as well as in Australia. Gossypium comprises about , species (Fryxell in Verdcourt and Mwachala, ) and eight distinct genomes (Fryxell, Cronn and Wendel, ), while Hibiscus sect. Furcaria boasts over , species and , identified genomes (Krapovickas, Wilson, ). With a few intriguing exceptions their genomes correspond to, or are confined to, distinct geographical areas.
