    Rewilding is a restoration strategy that aims to return anthropogenically impacted ecosystems to a "self-organized" state (Svenning et_al 2016). The issue is that in a number of ecosystems, large native herbivores are missing or extinct, and some of these species could occur in the present conditions in large areas of Europe, if they had survived, (e_g aurochs, Bos taurus primigenius; tarpan, Equus ferus; elephants, Elephas antiquus; bison, Bison bonasus; rhinos, Dicerorhinus kirchbergensis) (Bunzel-Drüke 2000).
