Newborns are highly susceptible to microbial infections largely due to their immature immune system that is not fully capable of eliciting strong immune_responses. Malnutrition is known to have adverse effects on both innate and adaptive immune_responses, which makes affected individuals more susceptible to microbial infections, including Salmonella.
