SUMMARY
In Africa`s freshwaters, Siluriformes are represented by 476 species in 51 genera and nine families. Several species are used in aquaculture and have been introduced around the globe. A typical economically important species is Clarias gariepinus (Burchell, 1822) (Clariidae: Siluriformes), a strong, air-breathing catfish from Africa and the Middle East.
