SUMMARY

    HIV is a retrovirus taxonomically grouped in the genus Lentivirus that entered the human population through multiple zoonotic infections from simian immunodeficiency virus-infected nonhuman primates. This review focuses on emerging concepts in the neurobiology of more "direct" CNS complications of HIV-1 infection, particularly HIV-associated dementia (HAD) and, by inference, also milder cognitive impairments.
