Oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma (OPSCC) represents a subgroup of head and neck cancers (HNSCCs) and includes tumors arising from the tonsils, base of the tongue, posterior pharyngeal wall, and soft palate. More than 70% of OPSCCs in developed countries are driven by a human papilloma virus (HPV) infection. HPV driven OPSCC has distinct demographical, pathological, and molecular features and a more favorable prognosis compared with non-HPV related OPSCC, usually associated with tobacco and alcohol consumption.
