SUMMARY
Respecting the rights of children is important when conducting clinical research. As per the Declaration of Helsinki, "When a potential research subject who is deemed incapable of giving informed consent is able to give assent to decisions about participation in research, the physician must seek that assent in addition to the consent of the legally authorized representative". Health Canada and the Public Health Agency of Canada state that "A child under 16 years of age should provide his/her assent and may refuse to participate even if the parent has provided their consent" but . . .
