SUMMARY
Over the last twenty years, publishing alternatives to the traditional subscriptionbased journal model have continued to expand, one of which is open access (OA). Masquerading as legitimate open access publishers, they present themselves as publishers of scholarly journals. The studies referenced above provide data that academics in industrialized countries are indeed publishing in predatory journals.
