White matter hyperintensities (WMHs), shown as areas of high signal in white matter on T2-weighted magnetic_resonance imaging (MRI), are indicators of cerebral small vessel disease and are associated with cognitive decline (Decarli et_al, 2001; Brickman et_al, 2008; Carmichael et_al, 2010; Hu et_al, 2021).
