SUMMARY
Tetrapods can recognize various environmental odors using olfactory receptors (ORs). The number of functional OR genes varies greatly among terrestrial tetrapod species, ranging from approximately 80 genes in chickens to 1200-1600 genes in rats. The fraction of OR pseudogenes seems to have increased in the primate lineage leading to humans, suggesting a reduced dependence on olfaction . . .
