Suboptimal thyroid function in pregnancy carries a significant risk of adverse pregnancy outcomes, including miscarriages, stillbirths and neuro-intellectual impairment of the offspring. Preconception evaluation of reproductive age woman with thyroid disease should be made with regards to the physiologic adaptations that appear in pregnancy, as well as to the importance of thyroid hormones in fetal development.
