    In 2020, Kato et_al proposed diagnostic criteria for classifying people who do not meet the 6-month criterion on the severity spectrum as "pre-hikikomori"; in that study, comorbidity with other mental disorders was not an exclusion criterion. Approximately 19% of patients with social anxiety disorder can be diagnosed with hikikomori, and approximately 18% of patients with hikikomori can be diagnosed with social anxiety disorder as well.
