Xenogeneic islets may be particularly vulnerable to T_cell mediated rejection as studies have shown that prolonged survival of porcine xenografts in athymic mice and prolonged islet survival using T_cell targeted immunosuppression strategies. The CD40-CD154 pathway influences T_cell-dependent antibody production, and modulation of this costimulatory interaction seems to be critical for rejection-free survival in heart and kidney xenograft transplantation.
