Those from_(i) to (iii) quantitatively characterize and/or correspond to simple and complex accretionary orogens, and from_(iv) to (v) to complex and simple collisional orogens, respectively. So, it is difficult to quantitatively characterize, define, and/or classify the various types of orogens, although some previous studies have sought to compare accretionary orogens based on terrane longevity, accretion rates, and juvenile crust production4,5,6,12.
