Myostatin (MSTN), also known as Growth Differentiation Factor-8 (GDF8), is a member of the transforming growth factor (TGF-β) superfamily. Inactivation, through C-terminal deletion, of the MSTN gene was shown to determine a two- to three-fold increase in the skeletal muscle mass in mutant compared to wild-type mice.
