Infection with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV-1) has been, for more than 30 years, a major public health concern around the world, including in Romania. HIV-1 subtype F was first described in Romania in 1994, using samples from HIV-1 Romanian and Brazilian infected people. Until now, the majority of HIV-1 subtype F1 infections in Africa have been identified in Angola and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).
