Breakdowns have an observed tendency to be clustered in time and recent research has shown that temporally clustered breakdowns also tend to be spatially clustered. Follow-up breakdowns are breakdowns occurring at a higher event rate but only in the immediate aftermath of a preceding breakdown. This, together with the observed concurrent temporal and spatial clustering of breakdowns, led the authors to conclude that follow-up breakdowns are induced by preceding breakdowns.
