I explore the relationship between patents and their citations using a measure of proximity in innovative ideas, as represented by patent abstract text. Pairs of patents with high cosine similarity represent proximate inventions: for example, two patents US5651964 "Methods for the suppression of neu mediated tumors by the adenoviral EIA gene" and US5585362 "Adenovirus vectors for gene therapy" are have high cosine similarity as both are pharmaceutical patents that deal with adenoviral gene therapy, which is used in cancer treatment.
