SUMMARY
Phenotyping can be aided by using descriptive statistics, such as cluster analysis to identify separate patient groups according to preselected variables. Burgel et_al performed more extensive phenotyping of COPD patients based on the clinical variables age, cumulative smoking, airflow limitation, body mass index (BMI), exacerbations per year, dyspnea, health status and depressive symptoms. Hereby, four clinical phenotypes were defined: phenotype 1 were relatively young subjects (median 58 years old) with predominantly severe to very severe respiratory disease, frequent exacerbations and low BMI; phenotype 2 were older patients (median 68 years old) with mild symptoms . . .
