SUMMARY
Because this zone has a highly dynamic SMB system affected by strong wind-driven transport, rugged small scale surface features, and infrequent but high impact precipitation events, the lack of dedicated studies of the transitional zone impedes a comprehensive understanding of past and present SMB changes in Antarctica. Changes in ice density along the cores may be converted to SMB provided that they are well-dated, but density-based reconstructions become increasingly uncertain with depth due to thinning and deformation of ice layers18 and may be impossible in zones with heavy ice deformation.
