HIGHLIGHTS
- What: The authors demonstrate growth-linked N2O reduction between pH 4.5 and 6, highlighting microbial N2O reduction potential in acidic soils. pH is a key parameter controlling soil biogeochemistry, but soil acidification, a natural process accelerated by the reliance of synthetic nitrogen fertilizer, the growth of legumes, and acidic precipitation/ deposition, plagues regions around the world1. The authors integrate cultivation and omics approaches to characterize a non-denitrifying two-species co-culture derived from acidic tropical soil. Growth experiments were conducted to determine the responses of the Serratia sp. and the Desulfosporosinus sp. to pH.
