    Appearance anxiety is highly correlated with eating disorders such as anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa, and appearance-related comments can increase appearance anxiety and directly or indirectly affect eating disorders. Levinson and Rodebaugh demonstrated that appearance anxiety symptoms predicted ED symptoms up to 6 months later and vice versa. For instance, difficulty in public eating is a bridge symptom between ED and SAD, with appearance anxiety playing a transitional role.
