Macfadyen from the in to three groups: juvenile (age range, wk), adult (40, wk), and older adult (3, years)The juvenile and adult age groups were all gilts (female pigs that have not been used for breeding), whilst the older adults were ex-breeding sows. Ethical permission for the study was granted by the University of Nottingham Animal Welfare Ethical Review Body (AWERB). Pigs were group-housed under directives set by the Department of Environment, Food, and Rural Affairs (DEFRA), as specified in The Welfare of Farmed Animals (England) Regulations, thus replicating the standards . . .
