SUMMARY
While most three-dimensional (3D) printers can only print a single material there is a growing interest in multi-material lattices that is going hand-in-hand with the expanding AM capability to manufacture such materials. Consider a single gyroid made from a ductile but low-strength material. Next, consider a similar gyroid but made from a brittle but high-strength parent material which then correspondingly has a low toughness but high strength. Although, a solely brittle phase lattice experiences catastrophic failure upon the initiation of crack growth, intrinsic toughening mechanisms are operative ahead . . .
