SUMMARY

    The commensal gut microbiota play a crucial role in shaping the immune_response, and provide a continuous stimulus to maintain an activated immune system. This review provides current knowledge of gut microbiota development and its interaction with the immune system in broilers. The production of short-chain fatty_acids decreases the pH of the crop, limiting the colonization of pathogenic bacteria. The high acidity of the gizzard and proventriculus limits fermentation and the production of short-chain fatty_acids. The fast digesta gesta passage limits carbohydrateStreptococcus, digestion in the resulting lower production of passage limits carbohydrate digestion . . .
