The long-accepted view that the Clouds have been circling around the Galaxy for many orbits (e_g, ) gradually gave way to the now-standard picture that their past orbits are highly eccentric with apocentres well beyond 200 kpc and orbital periods in excess of 5 Gyr, or even unbound.
