Forests of brown algae (i.e. In the Mediterranean Sea, the dominant canopy-forming species belong to the genera Cystoseira sensu lato (s.l.) (i.e., Cystoseira sensu stricto, Ericaria, and Gongolaria ) and Sargassum C. Agardh. In recent decades, populations of Cystoseira s.l. have significantly reduced their range, with dominance shifting to macroalgal species with lower intrinsic complexity (i.e., turfforming or other ephemeral opportunistic algae) or, at worst, to urchin barrens.
