The perception of the scope of oral and maxillofacial surgery and differentiation from similar specialities among dental students, medical students, trainee interns and pre-vocational junior doctors

HIGHLIGHTS

  • What: This study highlighted an overall low ability among Dental Students (DS), Medical Students (MS), Trainee Interns (TI) and Pre-vocational Junior Doctors (JD) to identify procedures performed by OMS, the OMS SOP and ability to differentiate OMS from similar specialities, however DS were more able compared to medical respondents. This study identified similar findings across DS, MS, TI and JD. This study highlights a greater awareness of the role of OMS regarding maxillofacial trauma compared to other maxillofacial areas within the SOP.
