The timing of pregnancies after bariatric surgery has no impact on children’s health—a nationwide population-based registry analysis

SUMMARY

    Some studies demonstrated that bariatric surgery reduced the likelihood of gestational diabetes but was associated with an increased risk of small for gestational age newborns. It was shown that children born to women who had bariatric surgery had a higher risk of perinatal complications compared to non-operated controls. The time elapsed between bariatric surgery and birth could thus also substantially impact neonatal outcomes and clinical practice guidelines recommend a period of 12-18 months after surgery during which conception should be avoided.
