The transformative nature of residential immersive life skills programs: integrating findings from a five-year prospective study of program opportunities, youth experiences, and outcomes

HIGHLIGHTS

SUMMARY

RILS programs are a unique type of life skills program providing youth with opportunities for a range of rich learning experiences in an away-from-home group setting with peers with disabilities. Other immersive participation-level programs have been found to provide compelling and potentially life-altering experiences for youth with disabilities, including outdoor adventure programs, physical activity participation interventions, and skills-based summer camps. As well, research on life skills programs has seldom examined the active ingredients of these programs, including the opportunities they provide for learning, growth, and social experiences.
