SUMMARY
While photometric redshifts can be used to identify proto-cluster candidates in blank fields (e_g, Diener et_al 2013; Chiang et_al 2014) or around radio quasars (e_g, Hatch et_al 2014), without spectroscopic confirmation the authenticity of these candidates is suspect. Several case studies probing more typical galaxies in proto-cluster environments at z > 2 also show similar behavior (e_g, Wang et_al 2016; Shimakawa et_al 2018a; Shi et_al 2020).
