  • What: The authors examine here the spectra at individual Ω/Ω values from the XSHELLS spectrogram presented in figure 3(a). The authors investigate the effect of the turbulent small scales on angular momentum transport using the azimuthal component of the Navier-Stokes equation. Using a heuristic critical Reynolds number argument for the destabilisation of the equatorial boundary layer at the inner boundary, the authors show that this scaling can help explain the experimental E1/5 scaling for the critical differential rotation, especially at lower Ekman numbers (§ 6).
